On September 19, 2018, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Cagayan de Oro hosted the Mindanao Power Situation Forum. This was attended by power industry stakeholders and participants from Association of Mindanao Rural Electric Cooperatives (AMRECO), Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE), CEPALCO, USTP, Mindanao Coalition of Power Consumers (MCPC), and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The forum aimed to shed light on the current power situation in Mindanao, specifically on the skyrocketing electricity rates and power supply. It also highlighted possible actions that could improve the power situation in Mindanao, such as shifting to renewable energy and interconnecting with other ASEAN countries.
Topics discussed during the forum were as follows:
(1).Mindanao Renewable Energy Development with Asec. Romeo Montenegro of MinDA-MPMC;
(2).Mindanao Power Situation with Atty. Edgar Allan Fronda of NGCP; and
(3).Renewable Energy Plans of the Philippines with Engr. Arnulfo M. Zabala, Supervising Science Research Specialist of the Solar and Wind Energy Management Division Renewable Energy Management Bureau of Department of Energy (DOE).
A round table discussion moderated by Mr. Mike Baños, founder of Konsumanted Kagay-anon, Inc. (KKI), followed in the afternoon. Issues regarding Mindanao’s energy situation were further elaborated. Panelists included officials from AMRECO, MCPC, USTP, CEED, Minergy/CEPALCO and IIEE.
Attendees were given the opportunity to ask relevant questions during the open forum participated by Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), DOE, and NGCP.
