Vincy Vacalares, Miss Universe Philippines candidate, visits her alma mater

A Technology Communication Management (TCM) graduate from the College of Information Technology and Computing is among the 52 women competing for the title of Miss Universe Philippines.

Vincy Vacalares is representing the city of Cagayan de Oro in the said pageant. The 22-year-old completed her bachelor’s degree from USTP in 2017, before earning her Certificate of Teaching from the same university. She has since been teaching at the Corpus Christi School.

In her interview with the USTP CDO Gazette, she looked back at her time in the University, and remembered the important lessons she learned as a student, from keeping up with classes to juggling requirements, “USTP molded me to become who I really am today… our instructors instilled in our minds that, whatever happens, we really should not give up.”

She also took the opportunity to thank her former professors, saying, “Through your powerful advice and lessons, I was able to survive. Because of you, I am here right now.”

Vincy is not a new face in the pageant industry. She was crowned third runner-up in Miss Cagayan de Oro in 2019, Miss El Salvador City Misamis Oriental in 2015, and Miss Camiguin in 2016.

Being a teacher, Vincy’s advocacy is focused on improving the quality of education for children in the city. Her goal is aligned with City Mayor Oscar Moreno’s focus on building more schools to address classroom shortage.

When asked if there was a certain area of education she would like to focus on, Vincy said that her focus would be on values.
“Since schools offer subject-related lessons already, what I want to focus on now is education, more on life lessons [and] important values that a person should learn,” she explained. “I’ve observed that in the young generation, there are less values.”

Since her audience would be young children, she plans to make use of stories to impart those values.

“I’m going to use stories. Through stories, I can impart the lessons and values… that’s the most important thing a person can have.”

“I am humbly asking for your support and prayers for my journey. It’s going to be a long but very exciting journey… I believe, with all your help, we can be successful in this endeavor,” she said in her message to the USTP community.

The Miss Universe Philippines coronation is on May 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
